Moore: Georgia pushes more diploma mills | savannahnow.com: Gov. Nathan Deal approved an appointed commission’s report that will create drastic changes to the way the state funds public colleges. Starting in 2015 with a base funding, the money state colleges and universities receive will no longer be tied to enrollment. In 2016, the state will fund colleges based on how well students progress, are retained, and, most importantly, by how many graduate. This is part of Complete College Georgia, our state version of a national movement. The goal is to add 250,000 individuals to Georgia’s normally expected graduation numbers by 2020. The presidents of the 35 University System schools, including the chancellor, have all signed off on this initiative. I hope it was under duress. State Sen. Buddy Carter, R-Pooler, wondered if colleges would become “diploma mills.” Senator, many of them already are. Any system school that shifted the graduation emphasis away from students and onto the school has already decided to become a diploma mill.
