If you're not cheating, you're not competing - The Frederick News-Post Online: The disappointing slump in SAT scores nationwide, and our students' dismal rankings among developed countries in math, science and reading, mask a potentially greater problem in America's education system: endemic cheating. Michael Josephson, the president of the Josephson Institute, which researches ethics in society with an emphasis on youth, said a recent survey of 40,000 high school students found that 59 percent had cheated on a test during the previous year, with one in three admitting they had used the Internet to plagiarize, and one in four admitting they had lied on the survey itself. Some students cheat and regret it. Others rationalize it. But one piece of the Josephson report supposes a larger problem. The consequences for the country may be significant. High school students who cheat are considerably more likely to be dishonest later in life than those who say they never cheated in high school.
